In this invited news and views piece for Nature Materials, we discussed a recent paper from the Chilkoti lab where the sequence encoding in elastin and reslin based synthetic IDPs was used to elucidate the rules that govern UCST and LCTS behaviour. This was especially relevant given my work on glycine earlier in the year, and has served as a useful reference point to connect ideas in the Chilkoti paper back to naturally occuring IDPs and phase separation in general.
